City of Vancouver, Washington
Project Description
Vancouver, Washington sits on the north bank of the Columbia River directly across from Portland, Oregon. The Cascades Mountain Range rises on the east and Mt. Hood, Mt. Saint Helens, and Mount Adams loom majestically above the city. “America’s Vancouver” has experienced phenomenal growth, more than doubling its population since 1996 to over 162,000 residents. To keep up with the recreational needs and interests of its residents, the City retained Opsis Architecture and The Sports Management Group to develop a citywide master plan for indoor recreation facilities.

The Sports Management Group took a broad view of City facilities and services and analyzed the resources for delivering recreational services. The result of this strategic planning effort: the
2007 Athletic Business Facility of Merit award winning Firstenburg Community Center featuring a two court gym, fitness center, wood floor studio, indoor track, climbing wall, activity pool, community room with kitchen, multi-purpose activity room, multi-purpose classroom, arts and crafts room, special events room, senior lounge, youth center and a sprayground. The renovation and expansion of the existing Marshall Luepke Community Center had been completed and planning is underway for the second phase of the Firstenburg Center, the addition of a 6-lane lap pool and crafts room. A library wing is currently under construction.
